The best place to start is by understanding how babies get milk from the
breast. Research has shown that milk release occurs following nipple compression
and a change of vacuum pressure at the back of the throat. Therefore a "good"
breastpump works by compression and a change in vacuum pressure. A "good" pump
cycles with compression, suction and release. This pattern is then repeated over
the course of the pumping session.
The tests done on infants show that the range of vacuum is from 0-250 degrees
mm/Hg. It is important that this range is both not exceeded and not sustained.
Exceeding this range or sustaining for an extended time can cause internal
damage to the breast.
There are two major manufacturers of medical grade electric breastpumps in
the United States: Medela and Hollister . An additional company - Avent America is known
for its hand pump. To become more familiar with the pumps that each company has
to offer, click on their names.
Before making a decision, talk to someone knowledgeable about pumps who can
help you choose the pump that is right for you.
